What’s inside your kit?

DNA Paternity Test Collection Kit Buccal Mouth Swab Kit Instructions USPS

Your kit contains everything you need to easily and painlessly collect a DNA sample in the comfort of your own home.

What happens at the Lab?

In a DNA paternity test, we collect buccal swab specimens (mouth swabs) from both the child and the potential father, with the mother’s participation being optional.

The collected samples contain cells, and most cells in our body carry a full set of genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). A person’s DNA serves as a unique “genetic blueprint,” much like a fingerprint, and is distinctively unique to each individual.

Upon reaching our advanced laboratory, we extract DNA from the cells and amplify specific regions of the DNA through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) for meticulous analysis. Our comprehensive test examines 16 to 27 specific regions known as short tandem repeats (STRs), which are repetitive sequences in DNA.

The child’s DNA pattern is then compared to that of the potential father. Since a child inherits genetic information from biological parents, analyzing the child’s DNA conclusively determines whether the potential father is indeed the biological parent.

What is the difference between a Private test and a Legal test?

Both the private and the legal test provide the same conclusive results. The only difference between the two are whether the sample collection is performed and witnessed by an unbiased individual, and whether it follows a chain-of-custody.

Private Home DNA Paternity Test

If paternity results are not needed in court, the private DNA paternity test option is suitable for those individuals who wish to find out the truth about paternity before deciding on the next step. This will provide the same conclusive results as the legal test. If a private test is chosen, a home DNA paternity testing kit will be sent over so that collection of the samples may be performed in private. The sample collection takes just minutes to complete and is quick, easy, and discreet.

Legal DNA Paternity Test

The Legally Admissible DNA Paternity test is intended for court use and is accepted as legal proof of paternity or non-paternity in courts throughout North America. Provided that the legal test option is chosen, a chain-of-custody sample collection process will be used during the collection by an unbiased third party individual (such as a doctor or a lawyer) in order to ensure proper identification, witnessing and fingerprinting of the parties involved.

If the test participants live in different cities, we can split the kit and send the components to different addresses. Each kit component is individually barcoded, and our laboratory will process your samples once they arrive at the laboratory.

To request a split kit, simply enter the following information in the Additional Information section during checkout:

“Please send the alleged father’s kit to <Alleged father’s name and shipping address>, and send the child’s kit to <Child’s name and shipping address>.”

An extra shipping fee of $10 will be automatically applied for each additional address within the US. Split kits will be shipped out using USPS First Class Package Service.

Yes. The results of a Paternity Test are conclusive. This means yo will know with 100% certainty if the alleged father is not the biological father of the child (an exclusion), or with >99.99% certainty if the alleged father is the biological father of the child (an inclusion).

There is no difference in the accuracy between the private knowledge test and the legal test, as both options provide you with the same conclusive results. However, for results to be used as legal evidence in court, proper steps must be taken during sample collection. A chain-of-custody must be performed in order to ensure witnessing and verification. The “court admissible” version of the private kit contains all documents required for third party witnessing – such as from a doctor or a lawyer – and the results can be used in court. If the results are to be used in court, the court admissible private kit, or the legal test should be chosen.

The turnaround time for DNA paternity testing is 1 to 3 business days from the date samples are received by our laboratory. The results of the test are provided immediately upon completion.

* Orders received before 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the same business day, while orders received after 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the next business day. Express shipping typically takes 1 business day for most addresses within North America, however delivery to some rural addresses may take 2 business days.

Testing of the mother is optional if it is known that she is the biological mother of the child. The test is absolutely conclusive even if the mother is not tested.

Both private and legal paternity tests are equally accurate, and the only difference between the two is the sample collection method. Private DNA tests are intended for at-home collection, by individuals looking for peace of mind before deciding on the next step. Legal tests are intended for individuals who require proof of kinship for use in court. The samples for legal DNA tests must be collected by an unbiased third party using strict chain-of-custody procedures. The legal collection requires the presentation of a passport photo and two government-issued IDs, along with fingerprinting – all conducted in the presence of a witness. The reports from our legal DNA tests are official documents suitable for use in court. If you need a legal test, click here to find out more about legal testing.

If the alleged father is deceased, forensic DNA testing can be considered using items which contain the alleged father’s DNA (e.g. an old toothbrush, electric razor, blood stains, saliva stains, or bone or teeth from an exhumation). For more information, please see our Forensic Paternity Test. If it is not possible to obtain a forensic sample for the alleged father, testing his direct relatives can be considered utilizing one of our alternative relationship tests (e.g. the DNA Grandparent Test, DNA Aunt/Uncle Test or DNA Sibling Test.)

The standard method of collecting samples for a Paternity Test is by using mouth swabs. However, if you wish to submit an unusual sample such as a toothbrush, razor etc. we are able to process it as a Forensic Sample. Due to the customized nature of each item, the cost will be higher than if standard mouth swabs are used. If you wish to send in a forensic sample, please select our Forensic Paternity Test instead.
