What happens at the Lab?
In a DNA Grandparent Test, a buccal (mouth) swab sample is collected from the Grandchild and alleged Grandmother/Grandfather. Testing both Grandparents is optional.
The collected sample contains cells, with most cells in our body housing a full set of genetic information in the form of DNA. A person’s DNA serves as a “genetic blueprint” and, like a fingerprint, is unique to each individual.
Our laboratory extracts DNA from the cells, employing PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to amplify specific regions of the DNA. Our comprehensive test analyzes 16 to 27 specific regions, known as short tandem repeats (STRs), which are repetitions of short DNA sequences.
The DNA pattern of the alleged grandparent is compared to that of the grandchild. A statistical analysis based on the anticipated match type for a genuine Grandparent/Grandchild relationship is then performed, and a “kinship index” is obtained.
* Biologically related Grandparent and Grandchild pairs are expected to exhibit a kinship index greater than 1.0
* The higher the grandparentage index is over 1.0, the higher the likelihood that the two individuals are related as Grandparent and Grandchild.
* Unrelated individuals are expected to have a kinship index value that is less than 1.0.

FAQ
Answers to commonly asked questions about this test.
Yes! To request a split kit, simply include the following information in the comment box during checkout:
“Please split this kit. Send the grandparent’s portion of the kit to (Grandparent’s name and shipping address), and send the grandchild’s portion of the kit to (Grandchild’s name and shipping address).”
An extra shipping fee of $10 will be automatically applied for each additional address within North America. Split kits are shipped out using USPS First Class Package Service (or equivalent). Please note that testing will only begin after all samples arrive at our laboratory.
Grandparent DNA testing can be done by taking a sample of DNA from the grandparent and the grandchild, and then comparing the DNA to determine the likelihood of a biological relationship.
It is important to note that grandparent DNA testing is less conclusive than parent-child DNA testing, as the relationship is one generation removed and there may be a greater degree of genetic variation between the individuals being tested.
However, if the alleged parents are deceased or not available for testing, the Grandparent DNA test can help determine the likelihood of relatedness.
Your DNA Grandparent test results will tell you the likelihood that a potential grandparent is the biological grandparent of a child. The testing involves identifying and comparing the genetic profiles of both individuals tested. A statistical analysis is then performed based on the match type typically expected for true grandparent and grandchild pairs, resulting in a combined “kinship index”.
RESULTS INTERPRETATION:
* Biologically related grandparent/grandchild pairs are typically expected to have a kinship index value that is greater than 1.0
* The greater the kinship index value over 1.0, the higher the likelihood that the two individuals are biologically related
* Individuals who are not biologically related are expected to have a kinship index value that is less than 1.0
Both the private and the legal test provide the same results. The only difference between the two are whether the sample collection is performed and witnessed by an unbiased individual, and whether it follows a chain-of-custody.
No, testing of both grandparents is optional, however in some cases, adding both grandparents to the test can strengthen the results. Additional fees will apply.
The turnaround time for DNA grandparentage testing is 1 to 3 business days from the date samples are received by our laboratory. The results of the test are provided immediately upon completion.
* Orders received before 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the same business day, while orders received after 2:00pm Pacific Time are shipped out the next business day. Express shipping typically takes 1 business day for most addresses within North America, however delivery to some rural addresses may take 2 business days.
The standard method of collecting samples for a Grandparentage Test is by using mouth swabs. However, if you wish to submit an unusual sample such as a toothbrush, razor etc. we are able to process it as a Forensic Sample. Due to the customized nature of each item, the cost will be higher than if standard mouth swabs are used. If you wish to send in a forensic sample, please visit Forensic Testing.
